A first at OMÜ: the region’s first VATS lobectomy
On 5 August 2013, Assoc. Prof. Burçin Çelik performed a video-assisted thoracoscopic left upper lobectomy on a 59-year-old patient with lung adenocarcinoma.

On 5 August 2013, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was used for the first time in the treatment of lung cancer at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine. Assoc. Prof. Burçin Çelik successfully performed a VATS left upper lobectomy on a 59-year-old male patient with lung adenocarcinoma — the first VATS lobectomy in the region.
VATS means performing thoracic operations with the help of video; it is a minimally invasive procedure. Operations that were performed as open surgery for years can now, with advancing technology, also be carried out with closed methods.
Prof. Çelik noted that lung cancer incidence in Türkiye had been reported as 74.2 per 100,000 in men and 9.3 per 100,000 in women; of around 30,000 new cases each year, 82% are non-small cell lung cancer and 27% of these are operable. In early-stage disease, VATS offers less trauma and pain, faster discharge and better cosmetic results.
Then Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Ali Haydar Şahinoğlu stated that the department had performed every thoracic operation except lung transplantation since 1997, that VATS had long been used for diagnosis and treatment, and that it would now be the preferred method for suitable lung cancer patients.
